That made me curious, so I searched around the web and saw a number of different versions. (Number indicates order of occurrence.) And I’m not sure why I’m bothered putting the time into checking it out after stumbling upon it by chance, I don’t even like the tune that much…. It was called the Butterfly, and was gathered by Bunting from Patrick Quin of County Armagh, who played at the 1792 Belfast Harp festival. This piece for violin is a challenge for beginners, but is a great favorite.

Here’s a version I made of this tune with mandolin, piano tenor guitar tin whistle & bodhran. The Butterfly appears in 4 other tune collections. What others do folks like to combine it with? Perhaps recomposed by Tommy Potts. Man was my professor pissed, but then they actually said they liked it! I hear a D in my head rather than a C. Are you sure you have got that the right way round? There were several songs on there I wanted to find, but didn’t know the names.
